i recently heard this at CBS:
“in the most mundane of events, God is working.”
i think i needed to hear that.
no, i know that i needed to hear that.
it’s been in my mind ever since.
around here, we’re either
rushing and squeezing
every last drop out of our days
or time is
slowly,
slowly,
oh-so-slowly passing
(always between 5-7pm).
sometimes, my main job is to:
make sure that K doesn’t crack her head open
while trying to jump from the coffee table
to the couch
while helping D get inspired
on what he should
write about,
draw or
build with legos
while little L is
crawling around,
trying to get to his favorite place…
the bathroom.
or while i’m working with him
for the bazillionth time
on improving his
gross,
fine or
speech skills.
but i just need to remember that
“in the most mundane of events, God is working.”
yes, yes He is.
He sure is.

because you will certainly be able to relate to her.
most certainly.

Who is weak, and I do not feel weak?
Who is led into sin, and I do not inwardly burn?
If I must boast,
I will boast of the things that show my weakness.

one thing that i really struggle with is
no matter how hard i try,
we are almost always in a hurry.
and it’s terrible.
terrible for the children
and terrible for me.
i’m sure it’s a combination of
having too many places to go
and too much to accomplish
but that is where we are in life right now.
as you know,
i’m re-reading one thousand gifts.
and it’s blowing my mind, all over again.
over and over
i am reminded as Ann says,
“haste makes waste.”

Man is a mere phantom as he goes to and fro:
He bustles about, but only in vain;
he heaps up wealth, not knowing who will get it.

i recently read this verse:
For God is not a God of disorder but of peace.
1 Corinthians 14:33
and i was immediately convicted.
i really like order.
i like it in my days.
i like it in my home.
i like it in my to do list.
but this verse is interesting because it says
that God is a God of peace.
and i think that peace is much more attainable
in my days.
in my home.
in my to do list.
than having my home in perfect order.
all the time.
but peace is not always what i am striving for.
far too often,
i think that if i get things in order,
then there will be peace.
and how i am wrong.
how i am so very wrong.

the walker has been incredible.
it has allowed L to be upright
without the support of human hands
along with his siblings.
and soon, very, very soon
he will have a walker playdate
with one of his best girlfriends
who is also getting a new walker.
but not soon after we got the walker at home,
L realized that he was still limited.
when we help him walk,
one of his favorite things to do
is to go into the bathroom
and go up the step stool
to the sink.
(what child does not love to play in the sink, i ask you?)
so the very first day with the walker,
L walked to the bathroom and then he
recognized his limitations.
and he stood in the hallway and sobbed.
heartbreaking, i tell you.

life is really good
and really happy
and really full
and really rich
and sometimes, it’s really hard.
but i am comforted in knowing
that this life is not the end of the story.
that there is more.
much, much more
beyond this
sometimes heartbreaking life.
our little L will be made perfect in Heaven.

(isn’t that such a gorgeous shot?)
where she revealed how not saying “no”
caused her some stress.

the busyness of life outside this house.
i don’t just stop.

i need to stop.
just stop.

is your house anything like ours?
there always seems to be an area in our house
that is in need of
a dusting.
or a cleaning.
or a picking up.

and do you know what i discovered the other day?
even the firehouse/police station is in need of a dusting.

sometimes life is like cleaning your bathtub.
and if your bathtub is anything like mine,
when that time comes around,
it really, really needs to be cleaned.
and so i clean it.
and it’s hard work.
and sometimes i am moved to tears.
especially when one little person comes in
to check on me and points out that
the shower curtain is in need of a cleaning, too.
and i have a bad attitude about it.
and irrational thoughts like:
“the bathroom would surely stay clean
if my children never came in here.”
and i sweat.
and as i’m working vigorously,
i am not even sure if i am cleaning it properly
or if i am using the best system.
and i doubt myself.
and my ability to clean a dirty, grimy old tub.
and my thoughts consume me.
and then,
all of a sudden,
lost in my thoughts,
i realize that i have cleaned
every.
tiny.
area.
of the tub.
and i rinse all the grime away
in a luke-warm wash of water.
and then,
the tub is gorgeous again.
and all i want to do now, is stay there.
with my pants rolled up.
and my face all cherry red.
because it’s not a dirty, grimy old tub anymore
but a gorgeous, smooth white tub,
asking for me to relax and just be in it.
in life, i am that dirty, grimy old tub.
so desperately in need of being cleaned.
and God is there.
He is always there.
ready to wash me off.
and ready to get rid of all
the dirt and
the grime and
the gunk.
but i need to be in His presence long enough
to realize that
i so desperately need it.
and so desparately need Him.

In fact, the law requires
that nearly everything be cleansed with blood,
and without the shedding of blood
there is no forgiveness.

as you know, D is in kindy this year.
and he loves school.
oh, how he loves it.
he asks me for homework on the weekends
and if i don’t get a chance to give some to him,
he makes up his own.
i am not expecting this same kind of fervor
with my other children.

his teacher requested that all children get lace up shoes,
instead of velcro, so that we did.
(you better bet that this momma
is good at online shopping.)
but you know what i’m not so great at?
teaching him how to tie his laces.
actually, to be honest,
i haven’t even tried.
it’s no that i haven’t thought about it.
no, i think about it nearly every single morning
as we are rushing out of the house
to make it on time for school.
but as any mother knows,
that is not the most optimal time
to teach one how to tie their own laces.
i have it on my list to look up a video on youtube
but again, i haven’t done that, either.

for all moms.
my favorite part was when it said this:
But a Christian should have a different paradigm.
We should run to to the cross. To death.
So lay down your hopes.
Lay down your future.
Lay down your petty annoyances.
Lay down your desire to be recognized.
Lay down your fussiness at your children.
Lay down your perfectly clean house.
Lay down your grievances about the life you are living.
Lay down the imaginary life you could have had by yourself.
Let it go.
this is so what i need to hear.
and now i’ve heard it.
and i am blessed.
may you be blessed, too.
it is so easy for me to get wrapped up
in the things i would like to have
put together or
completed
rather than looking into
each of my children’s eyes
and really hearing them.
really understanding
what they need from me
in that exact moment.
and then happily giving whatever that is to them.

to read about how she is waiting.
waiting with God.
