picture me {im}perfectly.that mess

 once Christmas was over
(more on that very soon)
i could not get motivated
to clean up the last few
(okay, many)
things.

so there they sat.
in the middle of the family room.
patiently waiting.
for days upon days upon days.

until i finally got the energy
to move them to my bedroom.

do yourself a favor
and check out Marisa’s sweet blog.

It is because of him that you are in Christ Jesus,

that is, our righteousness, holiness and redemption.

picture me {im}perfectly.nothing done

i am having a very difficult time getting
anything productive done.
i find the more children i have,
the less i actually accomplish
from my to-do list
throughout the day.

a sweet friend of mine recently asked me,
“when do you do anything else?
seriously, i’m asking.”

and now i’m answering her:
“i don’t.”

while our little L has been sleeping
so
much
better
at night
(the Lord gets the praise on that one
because i cannot take any credit for that)
his daytime naps have been
shrinking into near oblivion.
which means my time to be productive
is nearly non-existent these days.

and you may wonder what i do after
the children are in bed at the end of the day?
my answer: absolutely nothing.

i do not have the energy to
complete
one.
more.
task.
once they’re quietly in their beds.

maybe someday i will.
(i sure hope so)
but these days,
i’m just glad to make it to 7pm
without falling apart.

i have given up doing
a lot of things that i would like to
and i just try to at least accomplish
all of the things that i need to get done.
and even that’s hard.

But when he, the Spirit of truth,
comes, he will guide you into all truth.
He will not speak on his own;
he will speak only what he hears,

picture me {im}perfectly.the little gifts

my mother-in-law has a lot of
Christmas decorations in her house.

we were just up there for a little bit this past weekend
and while the adults were finishing up a glorious lunch,
my big kids found a few little gifts
that they decided needed to be opened.

yes, they painstakingly opened
a bunch of the little boxes that
rested in this adorable car and trailer set,
thinking that good things must be
inside such small packages.

no wonder it was so quiet.
i should have known they were up to something.
to their dismay, it was just styrofoam cubes.
they sure made a good mess, though.

and read about her
bold vulnerability

After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea,
during the time of King Herod,
Magi from the east came to Jerusalem and asked,
“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?
We saw his star when it rose and have come to worship him.”

i don’t know if you have seen this on pinterest:

but i thought it would be the perfect gift
for K to give D
for his 6th birthday,
which was on monday.

but of course, i left it to the last minute
(which lately is where all things tend to end up).
and i just couldn’t get the shadow
to really show up on his wall.
so i brought in the big guns…
i asked B to help.
and he couldn’t figure it out, either.

so here’s what we ended up doing:

and you know what?
D couldn’t be more thrilled.

but it’s not perfect.
suspects that maybe the pinterest photo was photoshopped.
that made me feel slightly better
that what i was trying to do was actually impossible.
but it was still something that i couldn’t do perfectly
and something that i left until the last minute to do.

and this girl

could have been speaking my own heart
when she wrote her blog post.

picture me {im}perfectly.christmas shopping

it is december 7th
and i have not started my christmas shopping.
i know.
totally not like me.

every year, i attempt to get
all of my shopping done in the early fall
and have it all wrapped up by halloween.
and every year, i fail.
somehow, i forget that fall
(or really, all the time)
is a busy time for us.

we have new schedules,
new schools,
two birthdays
and life going on
every fall.

but this year,
oh this year.
this year is oh so different.
i think that i have been in survival mode for a while now
(i haven’t yet been able to stop and assess the situation).
every time i leave the house,
i fear that i have forgotten to
bring something that i needed to bring.
or do something that i was supposed to do.

sometimes this life is just so hard.
and i just can’t seem to get it together.
it’s like my time goes into some sort of void
and i wake up
and am somehow further behind
than i was the day before.

but we have our first of
five.
christmas.
celebrations.
this weekend,
so i must get my act together,
at least for that first celebration.

lately.
oh lately,
we have been in a hurry.
everywhere.
we go.
it’s been horrible.
seriously horrible.
and i see it taking a toll on us.
as a whole.
this needs to stop.
immediately.

i am going to start re-reading
this weekend.
it’s necessary.
absolutely necessary.

this is all especially true
as one of the busiest times of year
is about to arrive.
or maybe it’s here already.

picture me {im}perfectly.impossibly too much

i try to do impossibly too much.
and it inevitably leads to failure.
every.
single.
day.
yet i still try to shove as much into each day as i possibly can,
never seeming to learn my lesson.

but on sunday, i refused to check my email once.
and you know what?
it was incredible.
absolutely lovely.
and some of that even carried over to monday.
i know… it was incredible.
and oh, so rare.

i got to just stare at my children
and happily watched them
unload hundreds and hundreds of
musical instruments,
train tracks,
trains,
cars,
blocks and of course,
fairies
onto the floor of the family room.
and you know what?
it didn’t even bother me.
(waking up to the mess was another story, though).

but that was such a rare moment for me.
to just sit.
i used to do that.
but haven’t in a very, very long time.
it was awesome.
and i want to have that each and every day.
but i am realizing that i have to intentionally carve out that time.
i must choose to make that happen.
or else it will get away from me,
like every other minute of the day does.
